Ofok NGO respectfully presents its ‘ICT 4 All’ project to train 100,000 undergraduate students in ICT courses from the Cisco Networking Academy and Sun Microsystems Academy.
'ICT 4 All' is an innovative project that was initiated by the Ofok Human Development Initiative (OHDI) to contribute to the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D). The aim is to bring IT literacy to as many people as possible by offering ICT courses accredited from global IT pillars such as Cisco Networking Academy and Sun Microsystems Academy through scholarships targeting public universities. Undergraduate students will be taught by an instructor, have access to an online curriculum, and take their exams online in addition to receive discounts on internationally recognized certifications.
Needs Overview
Despite Egypt being a leading country in the field of ICT in the MENA region, there is nonetheless a great deal of IT illiteracy among the youth. As an NGO working in the field of education using ICT, Ofok launched its ‘Human Development Initiative’ to promote the culture of e-learning, the use of Open Source technology and to establish a concrete Human Network “OHNet” in order to create better opportunities for the youth
A. Organizational Overview
Ofok's mission is to help individuals develop their careers, find employment and to provide them with the right skills to start a micro-enterprise or SMB. Ofok is self funded, working on a self sustainable model and taking full advantage of the opportunities presented by development initiatives taking place in Egypt to empower the youth.
B. Description of Programs
The programs offered by ‘ICT 4 All’ are designed in two phases to gently allow students to gradually progress in their knowledge of ICT.
Phase 1
• IT Essentials: This introductory course to PC hardware, software, and network operating systems prepares students to entry-level IT support careers and to take a wide range of certifications such as Cisco Certified IT Essentials, CompTIA’s A+, EUCIP’s IT Administrator, and CompTIA Server+ certification.
• Free and Open Source Software (FOSS): This program is a combination of two courses from Sun Microsystems. The first course is ‘Open Solaris Operating System Essentials’ designed to introduce students to PC software and operating systems. The second course is ‘Open Office’ which is intended to familiarize students with Sun’s Office suite.
Phase 2
• Advanced Courses: Once students have completed ‘Phase 1’and have become accustomed to e-learning, they will gain access to more than 100 online certified courses in ICT and business skills from the Sun Academic Initiative.
C. Population Groups Served
We target university undergraduates (aged from 18 to 22) and take into consideration the gender balance, geographical distribution and representation of minorities.
Our goal is to focus on universities. So far we have student community alliances with the four largest universities in the Middle East and Africa – Cairo University, Helwan University, Al-Azhar University and ‘Ain Shams University.
Our model in spreading IT knowledge amongst students is as follows: A group of Ofok volunteers – known as a chapter – are present in each university. Ideally, the chapter consists of students in the Faculty of Engineering with a passion for IT. An Ofok ambassador heading each chapter manages the initiative for the entire university. The chapter selects a faculty team leader from each faculty. The faculty team leader – acting as a mentor – recruits local faculty members who will act as instructors teaching the basics of IT to all members of his or her faculty. In the end all students from all faculties in all universities will be acquainted with the fundamentals of IT!
The chapter and the faculty team leader to have trained the largest number of people will be awarded free ICT and business courses in Ofok. This will be the reward for those who strived hardest in our noble goal to spread Open Source knowledge in Egypt!
